Our Blessings program is dedicated to silencing the weekend hunger of local children in need. Each week during school year participants receive a bag of food to take home for the weekend. The food distributed is supplied through community donations and purchased items from the Community Food Bank of Citrus County.
All participating students are enrolled in the federally funded free / reduced breakfast and lunch program. Each child has also been recommended for the program by a guidance counselor, teacher, or administrative staff at a participating school. Parents and guardians must sign an authorization for participation. The identity of participating students is only released to staff.
Within Blessings, eighty-five percent of the children served are ages six to 11. Another fourteen percent of children served are ages 12 to 18 and one percent are between the ages of 19-22. The students over age 18 are enrolled at CREST.
A staggering 68% of children in Citrus County’s public schools are enrolled in the federally funded free / reduced breakfast and lunch programs. Many of these children’s families/caretakers cannot provide adequate nutrition from lunch on Friday to breakfast on Monday morning. The federal program does not address this need.
